Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe?

M.2 describes the physical form factor. M.2 SATA drives use the SATA interface, while NVMe drives communicate over PCI Express. Confirm the connector keying and host interfaces before selecting a drive.

Will an M.2 SATA SSD work in any M.2 slot?

No. The slot must be wired to support SATA and must match the drive’s keying and board length. An NVMe-only M.2 slot will not operate an M.2 SATA SSD.

What is the difference between M.2 2242 and M.2 2280?

Both form factors are 22mm wide. M.2 2242 is approximately 42mm long, while M.2 2280 is approximately 80mm long. Confirm the host mounting position and available clearance.

Which capacities and NAND types are available?

M.2 2242 configurations span 32GB to 256GB using MLC NAND. M.2 2280 configurations span 64GB to 2TB using selected MLC, 2D MLC, 3D MLC, TLC and 3D TLC options.

Are commercial- and industrial-grade options available?

Yes. Commercial and industrial configurations are available by form factor, capacity and NAND type. Verify the published operating range and all required features on the exact part number.

Do all M.2 SATA SSDs support TRIM, NCQ and S.M.A.R.T.?

No. TRIM, Native Command Queuing, S.M.A.R.T. monitoring and firmware customization are selected-configuration features. Confirm each required function before qualification.

What information should I provide with an M.2 SATA inquiry?

Provide the host platform, M.2 length and keying, SATA support, capacity, NAND, operating temperature, workload, firmware requirements, annual volume, existing part number and required program life.
