Industrial mSATA SSDs
An mSATA SSD is a small, card-style solid-state drive, about 30mm by 50mm, that plugs into a mini-SATA socket on the board and connects over the SATA interface. Industrial mSATA SSDs are built for wider temperatures and longer availability than consumer drives. AMP Inc. mSATA SSDs run from 4GB to 2TB in commercial, industrial and automotive grades, with SLC, pSLC, 3D TLC and 3D QLC NAND.

Industrial mSATA SSDs for Embedded Systems
AMP mSATA SSDs deliver SATA III 6Gb/s storage in the JEDEC MO-300 form factor for space-constrained embedded designs, including single-board computers, industrial controllers, networking appliances and rugged systems. Commercial (0°C to 70°C) and industrial (−40°C to 85°C) grades support both climate-controlled and harsh-environment deployments.
NAND options range from SLC and pSLC for high-endurance, write-intensive workloads to 3D TLC and 3D QLC for capacity-driven applications up to 2TB. Controller-level ECC and wear leveling, plus options such as power-fail protection, encryption, secure erase, write protection and thermal protection, help maintain data integrity over the drive’s service life. Choose drives with a DRAM cache, which can add hardware power-fail protection, or lower-cost DRAM-less drives that also come in the shorter mSATA mini and Half Slim sizes. Automotive-grade options with conformal coating and underfill are available for vehicles and other high-vibration environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an mSATA SSD?
An mSATA (mini-SATA) SSD is a small solid-state drive on a bare circuit card, about 30mm by 50mm, that plugs into an mSATA socket and connects over SATA. It is common in single-board computers, industrial PCs, network appliances and other embedded systems where a 2.5-inch drive won’t fit.
What form factor and interface do AMP mSATA SSDs use?
They use the 50mm JEDEC MO-300 mSATA form factor and the SATA III 6Gb/s interface. Selected drives also work with older SATA I and SATA II hosts.
What capacities and NAND types are available?
Capacities range from 4GB to 2TB, with SLC, pSLC, 3D TLC and 3D QLC options depending on the product family. For MLC, to verify availability.
Are Common Criteria or CSfC mSATA SSDs available?
Yes. A 1TB AMP mSATA drive is NIAP Common Criteria certified and on the NSA CSfC Components List for hardware full drive encryption. See Common Criteria & CSfC drives for the certified models, or to confirm the exact part, firmware and certificate status.
Which NAND type should I choose?
Match it to how much your system writes. Write-heavy workloads such as data logging suit SLC or pSLC, while mostly-read data such as an operating system or media files works well on 3D TLC or QLC.
Is SLC mSATA still available?
Yes. SLC mSATA SSDs are available for write-heavy and long-life designs, along with pSLC as a lower-cost alternative. with your capacity and temperature grade to confirm the part.
Are industrial-temperature mSATA SSDs available?
Yes. Industrial mSATA drives are rated from −40°C to 85°C. Use the temperature filter in the catalog to see them.
Are rugged or automotive-grade mSATA SSDs available?
Yes. Automotive-grade drives are rated from −40°C to 85°C and built for the shock and vibration found in vehicles, rail and field equipment, with conformal coating and underfill to protect the board from moisture, contaminants and mechanical stress. for the ratings of a specific part.
What is the difference between mSATA and M.2 SATA?
They are different sizes with different connectors. Both can use the SATA interface, but an mSATA drive will not fit an M.2 slot, and an M.2 drive will not fit an mSATA socket. See M.2 SATA SSDs.
Will an mSATA SSD work in a mini PCIe slot?
Only if the slot supports mSATA. mSATA uses the same physical connector as mini PCIe, but the signals are different, so check your board’s manual to confirm the socket supports mSATA before installing a drive.
Is mSATA still used in new designs?
Most new designs use M.2, but mSATA remains widely used in industrial, medical, networking and defense systems with long production lives. AMP continues to supply mSATA SSDs for these platforms and helps plan replacements when a qualified drive is discontinued.
Are smaller mSATA formats available?
Yes. mSATA mini drives are available from 64GB to 1TB and Half Slim SATA modules from 64GB to 256GB, both in commercial or industrial grade. about the size your board needs.
Do all mSATA SSDs include the same protection features?
No. ECC, encryption, secure erase, write protection, thermal protection, power-fail protection, conformal coating and underfill vary by product family and part number. Hardware power-fail protection, for example, is available on selected drives and capacities. Each product page lists what that drive supports.
Can AMP help replace an end-of-life mSATA drive?
Yes. Send the existing part number, host system, capacity, temperature range and annual quantity, and AMP will recommend compatible options to qualify.
Is MLC mSATA still available?
For MLC, to verify availability for your design. AMP can also help you qualify a pSLC or 3D TLC alternative with similar endurance.
