2.5-Inch SATA SSD FAQ

What is a 2.5-inch SATA SSD?

A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is a solid-state storage device that uses a SATA connection and a serviceable enclosure commonly associated with laptop, industrial, embedded and server drive bays. It can provide a practical replacement for a compatible 2.5-inch SATA hard drive.

Can a 2.5-inch SATA SSD replace a hard drive?

Often, but compatibility must be confirmed. Check the SATA interface, drive-bay dimensions, 7mm or 9.5mm height, connector alignment, capacity support, operating system and workload requirements.

What is the difference between commercial and industrial SATA SSDs?

Commercial and industrial products can differ in operating-temperature range, NAND, endurance, component selection and supported features. AMP industrial configurations commonly support wider operating temperatures, but every specification must be confirmed by part number.

Are 7mm and 9.5mm drives interchangeable?

Both use the 2.5-inch SATA format, but their enclosure thickness differs. Confirm drive-bay clearance, mounting requirements and connector alignment before selecting a replacement.

Do all AMP 2.5-inch SATA SSDs include Common Criteria, CSfC or FIPS?

No. These are specialized options for qualifying configurations and requirements. Confirm the exact part number, firmware, capacity, certificate or component-list status and required security standard before qualification or procurement.

Is AES-256 encryption the same as FIPS 140 validation?

No. An SSD may support AES-256 hardware encryption without using a cryptographic module validated to the required FIPS standard. Confirm the exact FIPS 140-2 or FIPS 140-3 requirement, validation status and product configuration.

Are security and power-loss protection standard?

No. AES-256, TCG Opal, secure erase, write protection, power-loss protection and compliance-related options vary by series and configuration. Verify every required function before ordering.

What information should I provide with an inquiry?

Provide the host platform, required capacity, NAND, workload, endurance, operating temperature, 7mm or 9.5mm enclosure, security requirements, annual volume, existing part number and required program life.
